4 Holiday Hazards to Keep Your Pets Safe From This Season

4-Holiday-Hazards-to-Keep-Your-Pets-Safe-From-This-Season

The holiday season is a time for family, friends…and extra caution when it comes to our furry family members. From plants and decorations to candy and food, there are plenty of hazards around the house and at holiday parties that can pose a threat to our pets. At Delray Beach Animal Hospital, we don’t want any pets getting sick or hurt during the holidays. Here are four hazards to keep an eye out for and how to keep your pets safe this holiday season.

1. Plants

Many common holiday plants such as holly, mistletoe, amaryllis, and lilies are poisonous to animals if ingested. If you’re decorating with these plants, be sure to keep them out of reach of curious pets or opt for pet-safe alternatives.

2. Decorations

Tinsel, ribbons, and string are all common holiday decorations that can be very dangerous for pets if ingested. Tinsel in particular can cause major intestinal issues if consumed by animals. Be sure to keep these decorations well out of reach or opt for pet-safe alternatives.

3. Candy and Food

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and cats, so be sure to keep candy bowls well out of reach or put them up high where pets can’t reach them. Many holiday foods such as onions, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, and garlic are also poisonous to animals, so be careful not to leave any unattended plates within reach.

4. Parties

Holiday parties can be overwhelming for some pets with all the strange people and new smells. If your pet gets anxious around crowds, it’s best to leave them at home where they’ll feel safe and comfortable. If you do bring them along, be sure they have a quiet place to retreat to if they need it.
