Spaying and Neutering
THE PROCEDURE
Spaying and neutering carries many benefits for both the community and your pet. Pregnancies can be difficult, especially for certain breeds. The procedure can also eliminate or greatly reduce the risk of certain types of cancers or infections of the reproductive system. Territorial behaviors like fighting, urine marking spaces or objects and roaming are generally much less common in Boca Raton area pets that get spayed or neutered.
There are a few common misconceptions about spaying and neutering. While we generally perform the procedure when they’re puppies and kittens, pets of all ages can usually have the surgery performed.

For any pet, regardless of their age, we will perform a blood test before the procedure to ensure they’re healthy enough to be placed under anesthesia. Many people also believe that they should not have their female pets spayed until they’ve gone into heat for the first time, but this is not true under most circumstances. Waiting that long may, in fact, end with a surprise for pet owners in a few months’ time. Most pets receive the procedure at 4-6 months of age. We can discuss the factors that go into deciding the right time for your pet’s individual situation at their puppy or kitten exam in the clinic.
